Presented by: DKT WomanCare Global: Erasing unsafe abortion to reduce maternal mortality

Unsafe abortion is among the main causes of maternal death, killing about 47,000 women every year in the world. While South Africa has one of the most progressive abortion laws in the world, the Health Promotion Research and Development Unit of the Medical Research Council estimated that 50% of abortions still occur outside designated health facilities.

Unsafe abortions contribute to maternal mortality and morbidity, and treating complications from unsafe abortions burdens public and private health facilities. Misinformation, cultural stigmas, and too few facilities providing abortion services are the major challenges South African women face when seeking abortion care. Hence, increasing access to safe, affordable, and discreet abortion methods like manual vacuum aspiration (MVA) through task shifting and basic skills training should be a priority for health facilities.

By the end of the session, participants will learn about:

  • The advantages of the MVA for both healthcare facilities and women
  • How to perform a uterine evacuation using an MVA
  • Assembling and disassembling an MVA
  • How to process and reuse the Ipas MVA Plus®
